Donor Sperm

Our policy for insemination by Donor Sperm is complex. This is due to the question of "paternity" and financial responsibility of the resulting child.

Married Couples

For married couples the "husband' must consent to "paternity" of the child conceived by Donor Sperm. This will be true even if the couple is separated but not formally divorced. It is important to keep in mind that "The Courts" do NOT recognize the concept of "separated". They view the individuals as married or not married.

Single Individuals

Based on the concern about paternity and financial responsibility it has been our practice lawyers recommendation that we not perform insemination on any single individual. However, a court ruling (which unfortunately is being appealed) defines this concern as (1) legitimate and (2) a non-discriminatory reason for refusing to do insemination. This ruling, as long as it remains in effect, allows Grand Rapids Fertility to change it's policy.

The New Policy for Single Individuals is as follows:

We perform Donor Sperm Inseminations on "single" individuals who

  1. Have someone (a second person - any gender or relationship) who will take financial responsibility for the resulting child (i.e. "paternity")

  2. If someone does NOT have a second individual who will sign for child support (paternity equivalency) we will not perform an insemination.

This policy extends to donor and non donor sperm situations including IVF.

NOTE: Grand Rapids Fertility & IVF, P.C. reserves the right to enter into or not enter into an M.D. - Patient relationship with any individual for any reason.

Grand Rapids Fertility & IVF only uses FDA approved sperm from FDA monitored Sperm Banks that have appropriate "Chain of Custody" and present with FDA Certificates. "Chain of Custody" includes the direct arrival of the sperm from the Sperm Bank to the MD's office (i.e. NOT via the patient). Grand Rapids Fertility & IVF does NOT do ANY fresh donor sperm for ANY reason.
